Brexit - a Tragedy for the UK Arts and Cultural Sector. Interview with Tom Fleming on China Global Television Network

Tom Fleming was featured in a special news broadcast on the first 100 Days of Brexit. Tom was interviewed by the China Global Television Network and asked to describe the impact of Brexit on the UK arts and cultural sector.

Tom reminded viewers that Brexit is a deliberate policy of the UK Government and that this policy is doing incredible harm to a sector at the worst possible time. With Covid-19 exploiting the fragility and structural inequalities across the arts and creative industries, Brexit effectively kicks the sector when it is already down. Participants in this programme included museum managers from cities as diverse as Tula, Moscow, Syktyvkar, Kazan and Verkhnyaya Sinyachikha. The programme culminated in Tom providing advice on museum development and innovation for each of the participating museums.

Shared with more than 30 countries around the world, Selector connects a global audience to UK contemporary music. With a new show released every Friday, Selector takes the listener on a virtual tour of the UK, featuring the music scene of different UK cities and presenting the best emergent talent. Jazz, grime, indie or electronica – or somewhere in between – each week Selector puts together a truly eclectic playlist and catch up with the artists and labels who are leading the way in UK music.

Selector Radio is a Folded Wing production for the British Council. TFCC has been commissioned to:

- Review, recommend and design an overarching evaluation framework and tools for Selector Radio supported by British Council globally.
- A longitudinal piece of in-depth research to include impact stories of what Selector Radio has achieved in its 20-year history.

This project builds on our research and evaluation role of music development programmes in the UK and internationally.

Mapping the Festival Landscape of South East Asia

TFCC has been commissioned by the British Council to develop a baseline of key festivals across South East Asia. To deliver this, we are collaborating with Jogja Festivals, a festival development partnership in the Javan city of Yogyakarta. Jogja Festivals has recently established a study centre, with this project being their first research contract.

The project will provide an overview of how festivals are contributing to the creative economy of South East Asia. It will explore the types of value generated by different festivals - from driving innovation to diversifying the cultural tourism offer. We will develop case studies of festivals from each country in the region, plus run a survey which measures the skills and development needs of the sector.

The research will culminate with some recommended policy priorities for different Governments, with particular attention paid to the role of festivals in delivering the creative economy ambitions of Indonesia.
